The mountain was named by Scottish explorer and surveyor Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, who chose the name in honor of his acquaintance, Charles Buller, from the Colonial Office. The local Indigenous Taungurong name for the mountain is Warrinebut.
The Taugurung people are the traditional owners and occupants of Mount Buller. They have lived off the land for more than 2,000 generations.
